Music in the room: the Dimensions system
In almost every room, music playback is subject to acoustic conditions that colour the sound in several ways. In most cases, we pay little attention to this because we put appearance ahead of acoustics. Those who remain unhappy with the sound in their listening room often invest large sums in acoustic treatment and are prepared to follow certain laws of sound propagation very closely. Even then, what they hear may prompt them to spend still more on cables and accessories in the hope of improving the sound. Many of these measures operate on a psychoacoustic level and do not solve the underlying problem.
This is where the Dimensions system comes in: a concept already used by many music makers, including those working in acoustically challenging rooms. The monitors specialise in nearfield listening and present instruments and the soundstage in a way that gives producers and hi-fi enthusiasts alike a new experience of music. This starts with the bass range from 25 to 150 Hz, where the dipole principle is used. Here, particle velocity is used rather than sound pressure. In the nearfield, this produces a linear low-frequency signal with reduced room ringing, resulting in unusually clean bass reproduction. The bass stays in the nearfield and, through targeted phase cancellation, does not travel into other rooms.
Above 150 Hz, various radiation principles are available, each with its own advantages. Every manufacturer follows its own philosophy here. The Dimensions system uses a combination of dome and cone for the midrange, and a dome tweeter already familiar from the Kii Three for the high frequencies. The soundstage feels real even at low listening levels and has a striking phantom centre. A combination of active and passive filtering, together with carefully chosen placement on the baffle, clearly differentiates the instruments in both width and depth. The capabilities of the Dimensions system make it particularly well suited to shaping the overall picture of a production. Spatial, dynamic and tonal decisions come easily, even during longer listening sessions.
